Purpose is a significant aspect of textual analysis. Rather than students retelling or recounting text, a study and understanding of purpose and how it is used allows them to focus on the message of the text. Students need to recognise how the composer has constructed his message and then analyse why the composer would feel the need to deliberately confront us, perpetuate a particular viewpoint or even manipulate his or her audience.
